Sponsorships (Family and Spousal)

Sponsorships

Sponsorship provides a pathway for Canadian citizens and permanent residents to bring their family members to Canada as permanent residents. Permanent residency allows your family members to live, study and work in Canada.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents are able to sponsor their spouse (husband or wife) to immigrate to Canada. Common law partner sponsorship (partners who have been living together for at least one year), conjugal partners and same-sex spousal partners are all recognized by Canada as spouses and therefore can also be sponsored. Spousal sponsorships can be submitted from inside Canada or elsewhere, depending on the status of the sponsor.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can also sponsor their dependent children, parents and grandparents through family class sponsorship. The application requires the sponsor to demonstrate that they meet any financial or other requirements needed to sponsor their family member. It also requires the person being sponsored to go through health and criminal background checks to ensure that they are admissible to Canada.

The lawyers at Landings LLP have considerable experience with family class sponsorships and the sponsorship application process. Parent or Grandparent Super Visas

A super visa allows parents and grandparents to come and visit their family in Canada. Super visas are valid for as long as ten years and can allow a person to come in and out of Canada multiple times. Each visit to Canada can last as long as two years. Super visas are relatively quick to obtain, particularly when compared to the generally lengthy processing times associated with the sponsorship of parents and grandparents.

If you would like to determine whether your family member qualifies for a super visa or for family sponsorship, please contact us for a consultation.
